The STORIES Project is a vital initiative shedding light on the profound health injustices in Florida. By elevating the voices of Floridians grappling with systemic barriers and injustices, we aim to educate the public, media, and policymakers on critical health issues. The stories we share here — whether of seniors, parents and children, or those in the coverage gap– underscore that health justice is fundamentally not about law or policy, but about people.
After the end of pandemic-related continuous Medicaid coverage, the state began redetermining the eligibility of Florida’s enrollees and sending termination notices. Residents have received confusing notices that often lack the necessary information, while many others have received terminations that are clearly erroneous. Yet people are generally unaware of their right to appeal or how to do so.
Florida is one of just 10 states that has not expanded Medicaid. As a result, older Floridians, parents and low wage workers, and people struggling with illness go without critical healthcare.
Medicaid provides coverage for millions of low-income Floridians: pregnant and post partum women, newborn babies, children, seniors, persons with disabilities. Their lived experiences describe Medicaid’s critical importance and its problems.
Medicaid is critical for low-income Floridians with disabilities-especially those who are so disabled that they require home and community based services (HCBS) in order to avoid institutionalization.

Of the children in Florida with health insurance, nearly 40% receive their coverage through Medicaid or KidCare which can be difficult to access. Florida Health Justice Project is dedicated to helping children obtain access to the healthcare coverage and services they need not just to survive, but to thrive.
