MIE Article “Statewide Poverty Health Law Programs: Necessary to a Legal Aid Delivery System”
This article in the Spring 2021 issue of the MIE Journal, written by Miriam Harmatz and Katy DeBriere, contends that statewide poverty health law programs are essential components of a legal aid delivery system given that health is the top-ranked unmet civil legal need among low-income Americans. The authors explain why a “disconnect” exists between that need and available legal resources. Using the Florida Health Justice Project as a model, the article outlines how statewide health law programs can address these gaps through systemic advocacy, attorney training, consumer outreach, and targeted litigation.
