Medicaid work requirements didn’t work in other states. Florida considers trying it anyway

Florida lawmakers are considering adding work requirements to Medicaid even though similar policies in other states have failed to increase employment and instead caused many people to lose coverage due to complex reporting rules. The proposal comes as Florida is already facing scrutiny over problems with its Medicaid system, including confusing eligibility notices challenged in the federal case Chianne D. v. Weida, in which a federal court ruled that thousands of Floridians lost coverage without clear explanations or a fair chance to appeal. Critics warn that adding work requirements could worsen coverage losses for low-income residents while doing little to improve employment.
