Why a plan to fix health insurance for thousands of Florida kids has stalled

Florida has delayed implementing its approved KidCare expansion, leaving thousands of children without quality, affordable health coverage while families struggle to pay high premiums or go without care. Despite the policy being approved, Florida has delayed implementing the law for over two years—forcing working parents to make impossible choices and putting children’s health at risk.

Tatiana Lafortune, a working mother who cannot afford the KidCare premiums for her two children without the expansion, and also cannot afford the premiums for employer-sponsored insurance, said “I don’t know what they’re waiting for. They should see people in Florida have needs.”

Florida Health Justice Project, together with the National Health Law Program, has filed suit against Florida’s Medicaid and KidCare agencies requesting the court to order the state to implement the expansion.
